Pregnancy Movement & Birth Empowerment

What is Pregnancy Movement & Birth Empowerment?

Pregnancy movement and birth empowerment are pivotal concepts in maternal health, emphasising the positive effect that appropriate physical activity and informed decision-making can have during pregnancy and childbirth.

Pregnancy movement refers to intentional and safe exercise tailored for pregnant women. Aimed at promoting physical well-being through the various stages of pregnancy, reducing potential discomfort from pregnancy related conditions, and preparing the body for labour and beyond. Birth empowerment, on the other hand, is about equipping women with knowledge, confidence, and autonomy to make informed choices about their childbirth experience. Together, these concepts support a holistic approach to pregnancy, fostering a sense of control, strength, and well-being for women as they navigate these transformative years in their life.

How is it taught?

I support pregnant women with their movement and pregnancy journey in two ways. Through 1:1 sessions in my Cambridge studio and online, or though carefully designed trimester specific classes which will soon be available through membership to my On Demand Library (prenatal classes coming Autumn 2024).

I was brought up around the Active Birth Movement, so it was in my blood to gravitate towards this supporting role within my movement career. Early in my Pilates career, just after having my first daughter, and going through the journey myself, I realised how important it was to deepen my understanding of both the physiological process of pregnancy, and the effects and benefits of prenatal exercise. I sought further training and qualified as a Pilates Pre and Postnatal specialist. Additionally, I went on to train as a doula with both Paramanadoula, the highly regarded team of Michel Odent and Liliana Lammers, and Developing Doulas in Cambridge. This training broadened my understanding of the pregnancy, labour and postnatal journey, and the systems involved and choices available to women in the UK.

Since 2001, through my private movement practice, I have had the pleasure of supporting many pregnant women, both on a 1:1 and a group class basis. In my role as a movement educator for Polestar Pilates UK, I have also designed and taught workshops to Pilates teachers, sharing my knowledge and processes to broaden the number of teachers available in the field and raise the depth of understanding and quality of teaching.
