Pilates

Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness.
— Joseph Pilates

What is Pilates?

Pilates is an intelligent form of exercise. Connecting mind and body, it is a technique designed to improve whole body health. With an extensive and varied repertoire of movements, Pilates builds strength, increases flexibility and awakens mobility in the body. Through a personal awareness of ones movement we are able to improve our movement strategies and so our physical ability.

Created in the early 19th Century by a pioneering Joseph Pilates, the technique has gone from strength to strength, evolving alongside science and evidence based practice.

How is it taught?

Pilates is taught in several ways; on the Mat, with or without small props, in group classes or 1:1 sessions, and on specifically designed Pilates studio equipment.

In my studio at DOC I teach 1:1 client sessions, focusing on individual needs. I teach using all the Pilates studio equipment (Reformer, Trapeze Table, Combo Chair, Spine Corrector, Ladder Barrel) as well as on the mat, using many small props such as massage balls, therabands and foam rollers to facilitate movement.

I also teach a group Intermediate Level Pilates class in the serene studio space at the Storey’s Field Centre, Eddington.
